The Great British Porridge Off

Instant oats are quick, delicious and filling. One of my top breakfast choices and especially good for those of us in a rush in the mornings.

Since there are so many options on the market, I decided to take a closer look at what speedy oat pots taste great, how many calories in a portion, and what amount of protein we'd be getting from it.

Having tried 29 different porridge pots, here's what I found...

The first thing to note is that higher protein porridge pots are also usually higher in calories, as you might expect. The second thing is predictable too, that the most expensive porridge generally taste better.

Below is my opinion of every porridge pot that's ranked on this blog, in alphabetical order. It doesn't cover every instant porridge pot available on the UK market, but it comes close.

ASDA Golden Syrup Flavour Porridge Pot
Super impressed with this lovely sweet flavour, nice thick texture, and cheap price at just 50p.
Kcal 216 per pot - 7.6g protein

Fuel 10K Apple and Cinnamon High Protein Boosted Porridge Pot
With tasty little chunks of dried apple, I enjoyed this porridge for just £1 or 5 for £4 at ASDA.
Kcal 256 per pot - 13.7g protein

Fuel 10K Chocolate High Protein Boosted Porridge Pot
I could spend my life savings on this porridge. Sweet chocolate porridge heaven. I need alone time with this. £1 or five for £4 from ASDA, yes, yes, yes.
Kcal 265 per pot - 14g protein

Fuel 10K Forest Fruits High Protein Boosted Porridge Pot
Stirring in the hot water, the smell from this porridge was delicious. I'm not usually a fan of fruity porridge, but this was delectable. Easily one of my favourites. Just £1 or 5 for £4 from ASDA.
Kcal 256 per pot - 13.7g protein

Fuel 10K Golden Syrup High Protein Boosted Porridge Pot
A reliably tasty porridge, classic flavour as you'd expect. Nice at £1 or 5 mix-and-match pots for £4 from ASDA.
Kcal 256 per pot - 13.4g protein

Fuel 10K Honey Nut and Raisin High Protein Boosted Porridge Pot
Scrumptious. Lovely honey tones, the odd crunchy nut piece, and chewy raisin - great porridge all-in-all. Just £1 or five tubs for £4 from ASDA.
Kcal 258 per pot - 13.7g protein

Marks & Spencer coconut & cocoa nib porridge
What a great different flavour, a pleasant change from the rotation of golden syrup and apple and blueberry. Lovely and thick, super satisfying. I'd happily have this again for £1.
Kcal 283 per pot - 8.8g protein

Marks & Spencer maple syrup porridge
Hands down delicious! I think Marks & Spencer create some of the tastiest and least artificial flavours of porridge. And paying £1 is a steal for this sweet, fulfilling breakfast.
Kcal 256 per pot - 9.1g protein

MOMA Porridge Coconut & Chia
Pleasant enough but too bland, none of the flavours stand out and it's not sweet enough - that's my verdict, anyway. Plus it's quite pricey at £1.35 from Waitrose.
Kcal 247 per pot - 6.6g protein

MOMA Golden Syrup Porridge
Sweet and tasty, I liked it. The chunky oats that MOMA use are nice. As a consequence, both the taste and the texture don't seem as artificial as other brands. Available for £1.35 from Waitrose.
Kcal 272 per pot - 10.8g protein

Oat burst, apple and blueberry flavour
Not bad for 40p from Poundworld. Pleasant flavour, a bit too runny for my taste, but a good satisfying breakfast none-the-less.
Kcal 215 per pot - 8.2g protein

Oat burst, golden syrup flavour
Simply delicious, lovely sweet taste paired with a perfect thick texture, just 50p from Wilko's. Winning.
Kcal 221 per pot - 8.9g protein

Oat burst, original flavour
Surprisingly delicious for original flavour oats! Pleasing texture, satisfying, and one of the cheapest on the ranking coming in at 39p from B&M Bargains.
Kcal 225 per pot - 8.9g protein

Oomf protein oats, chocolate flavour
Chocolate is my favourite thing ever, I think. This is not overly sweet, with a perfect texture, heavenly cocoa taste, and super satisfying - I think I've found the one. Why are there not more chocolatey porridge options on the market?! I scored this one at Sainsbury's for £1.30 - worth every penny.
Kcal 288 per pot - 20.4g protein

Oomf protein oats, cinnamon roll flavour
My absolute favourite brand, Oomf nail this flavour and texture. With a protein hit in the morning too, this is such a winner. Usually £1.30 from Tesco, I was lucky enough to land on a half price deal and pick this little baby up for 65p. What a great start to the day!
Kcal 289 per pot - 20.1g protein

Oomf protein oats, golden syrup flavour
Delicious. Thank you Oomf for sweetening my morning with warm, gooey heaven. Worth the £1.30 from Tesco, but much better at half price - 65p is an absolute bargain.
Kcal 281 per pot - 20.6g protein

Oomf protein oats, original flavour
This company know how to get oats to a faultless consistency - ideal texture! Original flavour is not to my taste though, too bland, but that's down to me rather than the porridge. At £1.30 from Tesco, or luckily half price at 65p when I was shopping, it's worth the expense.
Kcal 281 per pot - 20.3g protein

Perkier Golden Syrup Porridge
Lovely and thick, but quite bland. Not one that I'd buy again at £1 from ASDA.
Kcal 230 per pot - 10g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, apple and blueberry flavour
Sweet and tasty, probably the nicest apple and blueberry flavour instant porridge that I've had. Usually 99p at Tesco, but half price at just 49p at the time of this taste test.
Kcal 214 per pot - 8.1g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, caramel flavour
Perfect thick texture, but too sweet. Won't break the bank at 99p from Tesco, but I felt better catching it at half price - 49p for an average pot of porridge isn't too bad, is it?
Kcal 215 per pot - 6g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, honey & vanilla flavour
Texture was spot on, and the honey flavour was lovely, but intense! Definitely one for the honey-lovers at just 99p from Tesco.
Kcal 213 per pot - 8.6g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, original flavour
Didn't stir in very well, boring flavour. Normally 99p at Tesco (but I caught them on a good day when it was half price and just 49p, get in), I will admit to popping a square of Green & Black's 85% dark chocolate in... which improved it by about a thousand percent.
Kcal 187 per pot - 7.2g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, strawberry jam flavour
The strawberry jam flavour is nice, but a tad too artificial for my taste. It just made me want homemade porridge with a proper dollop of jam. However, I like the sweetness and the texture of this, and at 99p from Tesco, this comes in the mid-range priced porridge pots on our ranking.
Kcal 202 per pot - 7.1g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, strawberry, raspberry & cranberry flavour
Nice, but I couldn't make out the different berry flavours. I'd just call this super sweet berry and it would be a much more accurate description. I bought this at half price, just 49p, in Tesco.
Kcal 213 per pot - 8.4g protein

Quaker Oats, oat so simple, sweet cinnamon flavour
My favourite flavour from Quaker Oats, hands down. Delicious tasting with a fabulous texture. Heavenly when I added a cheeky square of Green & Black's dark chocolate with ginger. I found this porridge in Tesco at half price for 49p, happy days.
Kcal 214 per pot - 8.2g protein

Tesco instant oats porridge, apple and blueberry flavour
My top choice from Tesco's own range so far, nice little freeze dried blueberries that leave pretty purple trails in the soft porridge. Not bad for 50p.
Kcal 192 per pot - 6.9g protein

Tesco instant oats porridge, cinnamon flavour
Filled it up with boiling water to the line indicated and it was way too watery! I like my porridge much thicker and this was a total disappointment. Even for 50p, I wouldn't buy this from Tesco again.
Kcal 212 per pot - 7.4g protein

Tesco instant oats porridge, golden syrup flavour
Nice flavour, but still on the runny side for me. I think this is a theme for Tesco's own instant oats porridge. Still, at 50p, it's okay! But why settle for okay?!
Kcal 209 per pot - 6.3g protein

Waitrose Love Life Golden Syrup Flavour Porridge
I'd give this one a miss - too soft and too bland. Won't bankrupt you at 89p though.
Kcal 265 per pot - 10.9g protein

Wolfy's nutty porridge with honey
One of my favourites. This thick, tasty porridge has a nutty crunch in every mouthful and, with the little pot of honey to drizzle yourself, it's sweet, healthy heaven in a tub. Worth the £1.35 from Waitrose.
