How To Make Porridge More Interesting

Bored of your oatmeal? Let me show you that porridge, the breakfast superfood of the Gods, can be more versatile than you realise...

Oaty porridge topped with blueberries and granola
Let's start with the base.

You could go for traditional rolled oats - most people make these up with a mix of half water and half milk - or try steel-cut oats or quinoa. Steel-cut oats take longer to cook and are usually chewier than rolled oats. They are worth a try to change up your morning porridge routine, but they aren't to my taste so are rarely found in my kitchen.

Porridge made with quinoa, however, is high in protein and makes a tasty alternative.

It's nice made with coconut milk, just one of the swaps that could replace milk. You could also try soy milk or almond milk. Perhaps season with a little cocoa powder or cinnamon at this stage.

Now... TOPPINGS! Here are a few of my favourite ideas -

  • Fruit - strawberries, blueberries, banana, apple, pear
  • Dried fruit - raisins, dried cranberries, desiccated coconut
  • Dark chocolate
  • Honey, syrup, nutella, jam
  • Nuts - chopped hazelnuts, cashews, peanut butter, pecans, walnuts, almonds
  • Yoghurt
  • Seeds - chia, pumpkin
