10 Foods That Make Healthy Eating Easy

Forget obscure seeds and foreign foods that you can rarely get your hands on, here are 10 of my favourite foods that you can find in your local supermarket and make healthy eating easy.

1. Chicken

High in protein and often a gym bunny's favourite, not only is chicken easy to cook, it's extremely versatile. This lean meat pairs wonderfully with a huge variety of spices, sauces and sides.

2. Peanut Butter

Dangerously calorific, but full of nutrients and healthy fat. Peanut butter is a great source of protein. I love it spread across healthy pancakes or smeared on slices of fresh, crunchy apple. Just take note of sensible portion sizes.

3. Avocado

Sales of this green superfood must have rocketed over the last few years. A fantastic source of healthy fat, you just know from the colour of it alone that it's got to be good for you.

I like to slice it up into a leafy salad - perhaps with a little feta - or mash it up on top of a wholewheat bagel.

4. Sweet Potato

Hello healthy carbs! A potato that counts as one of your five-a-day, it's full of vitamins and affordable too.

Try them roasted, puréed, steamed, baked, or grilled - they're wonderfully versatile. I like to bake my sweet potatoes and dollop cottage cheese on them, or slice them up into wedges and coat them in spices.

5. Banana

Ah the humble banana, so cheap, so sweet. It's one of the world's most widely eaten fruits and it's definitely one of my favourites.

I love it mashed on wholemeal toast with a layer of crunchy peanut butter, sliced and fanned out on top of hot porridge, or eaten just as it is.

6. Yoghurt

A great meat-free source of protein - I recommend low fat Greek yoghurt and Icelandic-style yoghurt called Skyr for healthy, thick deliciousness. I became obsessed with this stuff when I went over to Iceland! There's a reason that these people have some of the healthiest diets on the planet.

7. Chilli

A brilliant addition to so many meals, chilli is said to fire up your metabolism. It's spicy taste can bring life to the most boring of meals.

8. Eggs

Surprisingly versatile, eggs are full of protein, a natural source of fat, and incredibly tasty. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Knock 'em up into an omelette, poach them for a slice of brown toast, fry them to dip sweet potato fries in their lovely runny yolk, boil them to quarter into a salad... the list goes on...

9. Oats

A healthy carbohydrate that's great to start the day with by heating into porridge, or a wonderful snack when whipped into a homemade protein bar. It's energy is released slowly, so should sustain you for much longer than refined carbohydrates.

10. Dark Chocolate

Have your cake and eat it. Quash those naughty cravings for chocolate with a little of the dark stuff. It's much better for you than the milky or white stuff.
