Healthy Eating in Cambridge

Guest blogger Joss Moore

Cambridge, a city steeped in history and culture, is now becoming a haven for both tech and restaurant start-ups. Over the last few years countless new cafés and restaurants have sprung up in the city providing almost too much choice for the Cambridge visitor!

This is where blogger and foodie, Joss Moore, is here to help. She's exclusively handpicked her top five healthy eateries for On The Sliding Scales to make your decision easier.

The Old Bicycle Shop

This used to be the oldest bicycle shop in Cambridge, supposedly frequented by Charles Darwin, but has now turned into an excellent brunch and dinner spot. Due to its proximity to the train station, this is the perfect place to stop off and get fuelled up for a day of sight-seeing or shopping.

I recommend trying the sweet potato pancakes or the duck egg shaksouka. Inside is attractively decorated in a vintage style with many elements harking back to its cycling heritage. They also do fantastic freshly made cocktails if you fancy a treat.

Espresso library

Just off the corner of Parker’s Piece this is a hotspot for Mac-wielding students keen to get their coffee kick. And fair enough, the coffee here is some of the best in Cambridge, but they also do fantastic matcha smoothies and have a good selection of teas too.

Once again a bicycle theme here, drool over the vegan brownie and the selection of colourful fixie bikes adorning the walls and hanging from the ceiling.

If you're lucky, you can catch one of their kitchen takeovers - Provenance Kitchen currently has a regular spot on a Friday evening, but can usually be found serving restaurant quality food from their all-American original airstream at pop-up locations around the city. On this occasion I had the delicious sea bass and green lentils.

Cambridge Food Park

If you really want to experience Cambridge like a local you should try and catch one of the vans from the Cambridge Food Park, the city's street food market. You can follow them on twitter or on their blog.

A strong favourite of mine is the Wandering Yak, who describe themselves as Middle Eastern inspired street food, focusing on incredible flavour, nourishing plants and grains. They won the 2016 Cambridge Food & Drink Awards street food van of the year and can usually be found very close to the station or at Cambridge Science Park during the week.

Fitzbillies

A well-renowned establishment in Cambridge, known for its delicious selections of cakes, but the brunch here is not to be missed. I visited for the first time with my friend Steph and had the amazing avocado and ricotta on toast. There’s two cafés in Cambridge to choose from, I recommend popping into the one on Bridge Street pre or post punting!

Rainbow café

I can’t talk about healthy eating in Cambridge without mentioning the Rainbow Café. Tucked down an alley opposite the imposing Kings College, this café offers a wide selection of vegan food as colourful as the name suggests. The menu is seasonal so changes regularly but think warming soups in winter and fresh vibrant salads and pulses in summer.

So there you have it, a snapshot of what's on offer in this small but vibrant city!
