How To Make Favourite Comfort Food Healthier

I recently read an article about Britain's favourite comfort food. The classic Sunday roast, Italy's Spaghetti Bolognese, and steak and chips all hit the list of the dishes we love. And they're popular for a reason, but what if we could enjoy this loveliness in a way that better nourishes our bodies? We investigate...

Traditional Roast Dinner

Go heavy on the veggies, swap naughty roast potatoes for sweet potato, go easy on the gravy - there's lots you can do to make your Sunday lunch a lot better for you. Perhaps choose a leaner meat, like chicken breast rather than pork belly, for your tasty protein portion.

And remember, it's a roast dinner but it doesn't have to be huge! Don't think that it needs to be a massive plateful because that's just tradition.

Spaghetti Bolognese

Use lean beef mince to make your own Bolognese sauce. Swap your starchy white pasta for wholewheat spaghetti - it digests more slowly so keeps you fuller for longer - or go a step further and have courgetti instead. Nothing wrong with adding some extra veggies!

Steak and Chips

Steak
Hmm... chips? What about sweet potato fries or fresh salad and delicious vegetables with your juicy steak instead? If you're thinking about which cuts of steak are lower in fat, I'd recommend going for a fillet, but you can always trim the fat off the edges of other cuts.

Pizza

Make your own base and forget the white flour. Why not try a healthier flour - like whole wheat, spelt, or buckwheat flour? There's also a new base recipe based on cauliflower. I love it!
